The 2009 Sustainability Report presents the second annual overview of its sustainability performance and practices.
Given its privileged relations with tourists, other public bodies and economic agents in Portugal and abroad, the Institute has special sustainability responsibilities.
Continuing on from last year’s report, this report aims to analyse challenges at two distinct levels: the challenges faced by Turismo de Portugal as a public institute and those faced by Portuguese tourism, including the inherent impact of the tourism trade.
This year Turismo de Portugal’s stakeholders were consulted - thereby enabling in-house reflection and identification of expectations in the sector concerning key issues related to sustainable development.
This reflection served as a starting point in order to define specific commitments and action plans for increasingly rigorous management of tourism resources and impacts.
The 2008 Sustainability Report initiates a process of conducting an annual review of the economic, environmental and social performance of Turismo de Portugal considering the importance of tourism in the national economy and the prominent role given to the Institute as to structure, development and promotion. Turismo de Portugal is the first authority granted such responsibility and scope of operations to be the first to report on its performance in the tourism sector internationally.
The contents of this report relate to the performance of Turismo de Portugal and encompasses the direct impact in terms of the sustainability of the Institute and the various impacts that result from carrying out activities within the tourism sector.
