Turismo de Portugal joins the Portuguese Pact for Plastics

Sustainability

05.02.2020

Turismo de Portugal joined the Portuguese Pact for Plastics as a Founding Institutional Member. The Portuguese Pact for Plastics is coordinated by the Smart Waste Portugal Association, with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action, Ministry of Economy and Digital Transition and Ministry of the Sea, and is part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Network of Pacts for Plastics.

Through this action, Turismo de Portugal becomes, together with the Government, the different agents of the plastics value chain, Academia, NGOs and other public bodies committed to solving the problems associated with plastics, a collaborative and innovative platform, united by a common vision of a circular economy for plastics where they will never become waste.

With the various entities involved, Turismo de Portugal is committed to developing actions to achieve a set of ambitious goals and objectives for 2025:
_ Define, by 2020, a list of single-use plastics considered problematic or unnecessary and define measures for their elimination;
_ Ensure that 100% of plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable;
_ Ensure that 70% or more of plastic packaging is actually recycled, through increased collection and recycling;
_ Incorporate, on average, 30% recycled plastic in new plastic packaging;
_ Promote awareness-raising and education activities for consumers (current and future) on the circular use of plastics.

The Portuguese Pact for Plastics is a collaborative initiative that aims to lead by example and serve as inspiration in the movement of transition from plastics to a circular economy.

Plastic pollution, especially in the marine environment, clearly visible on beaches, is today one of the biggest environmental challenges the planet faces, as a large proportion of plastics are produced for single use and often end up being discarded without being recycled.

By joining this Pact, Turismo de Portugal aims to contribute to overcoming obstacles and making progress in the circular economy of plastics in the tourism sector, in partnership with its partners and stakeholders, through efficient waste management in tourism activity - one of the objectives of the Tourism Strategy 2027.
