The Chairman of Turismo de Portugal, Luís Araújo, is in New York and is participating in a debate promoted by the Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, on the theme "Sustainable and resilient tourism at the heart of an inclusive recovery".
Organised by the United Nations General Assembly in collaboration with the World Tourism Organization, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), this debate brings together representatives of Member States and public and private partners, among other relevant stakeholders, providing an opportunity to discuss strategies and share best practices and experiences in the tourism sector.
The programme includes round tables dedicated to the themes:
_ For People: leaving no one behind through inclusive tourism
_ For Planet: accelerating a climate friendly transformation
_ For Prosperity: re-invigorating investments in sustainable tourism
Turismo de Portugal has been carrying out important work in the field of sustainability, which it considers to be one of the pillars for building the tourism of the future. This is the purpose of the Turismo +Sustentável 20-23 (20-23 +Sustainable Tourism) Plan, which identified relevant areas of action aimed at contributing to a tourism response to the urgent challenges of sustainability, in alignment with the 2027 National Tourism Strategy and the objectives of the Environmental Fund, in terms of circular economy and sustainability.
Likewise, the recently launched Reactivate Tourism | Build the Future Action Plan proposes actions and sets goals in line with this context, aiming to build a more sustainable, responsible and resilient tourism.
