Portugal left a definitive mark at the
Gala of the Michelin Guide 2023 - Spain & Portugal, which was held yesterday in Toledo, Spain. In addition to the stars awarded, Portugal will have, as of 2024, a Guide exclusively dedicated to our country. Thus, after 113 years of existence of the prestigious Guide, the much sought-after and deserved autonomy of Portuguese gastronomy and haute cuisine will become a reality.
Portugal will now have an edition of the Michelin Guide consisting solely of Portuguese restaurants (which currently represent around 20% of the total of the Iberian Guide), which will mean an increase in the number of restaurants covered, with expected repercussions on the number of stars awarded and the Bib Gourmand selection.
Gastronomy is one of the assets of the 20-27 Tourism Strategy (ET2027) and in that perspective, this recognition, whether by the growing number of stars awarded to Portuguese restaurants, or by the existence of an exclusive Guide, puts the entire value chain of Portuguese gastronomy at increasingly higher levels of international recognition, particularly in the luxury segment, with the consequent contribution to the positioning of Portugal as a tourist destination of excellence.
This is yet another demonstration of the growing appreciation of haute cuisine made in the country, and this Guide, as a result of its prestige and notoriety (present in 4 continents and 40 countries), will be yet another contribution to the projection of Portugal as a tourist destination that differentiates and provides unique experiences throughout the year and throughout the territory, simultaneously ensuring the growth in value of national tourism.
