Turismo de Portugal, responding to an invitation from the Fair’s organisers, will be attending the
50th edition of the Buenos Aires International Book Fair, which runs from 24 April to 9 May. Portugal’s institutional stand, covering an area of 70 m², will showcase the exhibition concept
‘Una mesa para leer Portugal’ (A table for reading Portugal), centred around a table-shaped installation that symbolically represents the country.
Through this initiative, 50 suggestions for
literary experiences in Portugal are presented, including writers’ homes, literary routes, libraries, bookshops, festivals, cultural initiatives and accommodation linked to literature. Under the motto “Portugal: the journey begins here”, the space hosts a programme of activities including talks, themed sessions and cultural outreach initiatives aimed at different audiences.
Notable authors in the Portuguese delegation include Afonso Cruz and Valter Hugo Mãe. The programme also features initiatives dedicated to cultural relations between Portugal and Argentina. The programme includes participatory activities, such as workshops and events aimed at children, reinforcing the experiential and intergenerational nature of literature as a means of exploring the local area and cultural identity.
Portugal’s presence at the Buenos Aires Book Fair is organised in collaboration with the Portuguese Embassy in Argentina and Camões Institute for Cooperation and the Portuguese Language. This participation forms part of the strategy to promote Turismo de Portugal and to enhance cultural tourism, with a particular focus on literary tourism as a structured product, which includes itineraries, writers’ homes, libraries, cultural routes and experiences associated with authors and seminal works of Portuguese literature.
