Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, known as Vhils, created a mural in Brussels which was inaugurated on 26 June 2024, in a joint initiative between Villes de Bruxelles, the Embassy of Portugal in Belgium and VisitPortugal.
This initiative is the result of a partnership and joint support between Villes de Bruxelles, the Embassy of Portugal in Belgium and VisitPortugal, with the inaugural ceremony being attended by the President of Turismo de Portugal, Carlos Abade.
The programme includes a guided tour of Vhils’ solo exhibition “Multitude” at the MIMA museum in Brussels, which will open to the public on the 29th of June and will remain on display until early next year. The exhibition focuses on the relationship established between people and cities, bringing to light the human stories buried in our collective past and present.
Spread throughout MIMA, visitors can find mural sculptures, billboards, urban landscapes, videos and installations from different eras, which offer an interesting view of the Portuguese artist regarding this interaction.
The work pays homage to the 25th of April 1974 revolution in Portugal, suggesting a reflection on the values that guided it, in a call for a democratic, inclusive and egalitarian society.
“By welcoming this work into public space, Brussels is reaffirming these values for everyone to see,” says Delphine Houba, Vice-President of the Chamber for Culture of the City of Brussels.
