Adding value to the tourism professions and attracting talent

The qualification of human resources is essential, in order to consolidate the competitiveness of tourism. This is why Turismo de Portugal is committed, through its network of 12 schools, to contributing to the sustainability and quality of the services that companies and agents in the sector provide, by enhancing the worth of the professions and promoting work in tourism.

Concerning the role of training for the qualification of human resources, Turismo de Portugal developed the Digital Academy, an online training platform (synchronous and asynchronous) which provides all professionals in the tourism sector with a wide range of training contents.

// Main training programmes available:

_ Upgrade Digital Programme - digital training in all areas of tourism
_ Upgrade Sustainability Programme - training for sustainability in tourism (environmental, economic and social)
_ BEST Programme - Business Education for Smart Tourism - training for entrepreneurial tourism managers
_ Clean & Safe Programme - training in hygiene and safety measures for the various subsectors of tourism, focused on Directorate-General for Health (DGS) requirements and guidelines for a response to the COVID-19 pandemic situation
_ Executive Training - training for professionals in management and operational functions, in several areas

// MOOC's

The Digital Academy also provides access to a set of MOOC's (Massive Open Online Courses) created directly by the Turismo de Portugal Schools, or available in partnership with other entities, which enable high quality self-training exercises. All the training provided in the Digital Academy is certified by Turismo de Portugal and delivered by the best national and international trainers.

// Special regime for foreign students

The Turismo de Portugal's Tourism and Hospitality Schools also have a special regime exclusively for international students who want to attend their training courses.

This special application regime is exclusively for international candidates who:
_ do not have Portuguese nationality;
_ are not nationals of a member state of the European Union;
_ or have not resided in Portugal for more than two years without interruption.

// Tourism Training Talent

Turismo de Portugal Schools train more than 3,000 students annually, preparing them for their first job. The Tourism Training Talent (TTT) programme used by the schools has been distinguished by the UNWTO as an example of innovation and excellence dedicated to the training of future generations of tourism human resources. At the same time, they qualify around 5,000 tourism professionals through on-the-job training, with a view to further raising the prestige of the tourism professions.

We focus on people’s talent, on the development of soft skills, innovation, the application of training to other segments and activities and the globalisation of tourism professionals, as a foundation for the success of tourism in Portugal.

This focus involves taking a differentiating approach to curricula, favouring soft skills and communication, validating the impact of artistic teaching on student training, in new offerings in the fields of:
– Entrepreneurship
– Languages
– Digital marketing
– Revenue management
– Oenology
– Outdoor tourism
– Cultural and heritage tourism

// Innovation

Similarly, new projects such as the Tourism Creative Factory and the recently created Experimentation Open Laboratories (LAE) make it possible to open schools to the community and to encourage entrepreneurship, extending the role of training to other activities and enhancing the worth of careers in this sector.
